The Roll of Honour DETECTIVE CONSTABLE MALCOLM WHIGHAM Malcolm died on 16 August 2007, aged 42. He was
involved in a road traffic accident where his police motorcycle was in a collision with a car at Pumpherston, near Livingston, West
Lothian, while working on secondment with the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency. CONSTABLE DEREK ANDREW LEITCH Derek died 21st June 2007 as a result of head injuries sustained in an accidental fall in the police barracks while attending a two week multi-national public order training exercise in France. He was 47 years of age and had 28 years service. He was attached to the Courts Branch in Glasgow. Derek is survived by his wife Gail and daughters Rebecca and Emma. CONSTABLE KIRSTY ALLAN Kirsty was killed in a road traffic accident, on 2nd March 2007, while travelling to report for duty at Oakley. Her car lost control on an icy road and overturned near Dunfermline. Kirsty was 24 years of age, was appointed in February 2005 and had just completed her probation. She is survived by her husband Willie and their son. CONSTABLE KEVIN LOWE Kevin Lowe was killed on 20th October 2006 when his unmarked police vehicle was involved in a collision on the A77. He was 46 years of age and is survived by his fiancée Lesley, a serving officer, and his two sons Erik and Graeme. CONSTABLE ALAN McMURRAY Alan McMurray was killed on 4th February 2006 after being struck by a van while investigating the scene of an earlier accident. Alan joined the force in 1993, transferring to the traffic department in 2001. He is survived by his wife Gillian, a serving officer and his daughters Emma and Katy. CONSTABLE KAREN BALFOUR Karen Balfour was killed on 5th January 2006 when her car was involved in a road accident while travelling to duty. She had 14 years service and was highly respected for her work in the community, especially local schools. Karen was aged 37 and is survived by her husband Gordon. CONSTABLE BARRIE LAWSON Barrie Lawson was killed on 19th September 2005 when his car was involved in an accident on his way home from duty. He was aged 30 and is survived by his wife Dawn Marie. ACC DERRICK SCOUGAL On 28th September 2004 Derrick Scougall collapsed while attending a national police conference in Ayr. He joined Northumbria Police in 1984 and transferred to Fife in 2002. He was aged 45 and is survived by his wife Susan and sons Alistair and Callum. CONSTABLE JOSEPH TAGGART On 27th August 2004 Joseph Taggart collapsed and died whilst on duty within Govan Police Office. He was aged 49 and is survived by his wife Katrina and children Joanne, Kevin, Stephen and Elaine. SERGEANT ALASDAIR FERRY Alasdair Ferry was killed on 8 October 2003. His motorcycle was in collision with two vehicles in Edinburgh city centre. Although serving with Fife, Sgt Ferry was seconded to the Crown Office and Procurators Fiscal Service where he was setting up their Diversity Training Programme. Alasdair was a prominent figure in the pursuit of equality of opportunity within the Scottish Police Service and the wider criminal justice system. He served on the executive of various organisations working towards such aims. He was 40 years of age and is survived by his wife Shonagh and their four children; Gregor, Amy, Hope and Daniel. CONSTABLE JAMES CLARKE Jim Clarke was killed on 16 August 2002. He was on routine traffic patrol on the A82 at Loch Lomond during the late evening when the unmarked police car in which he was the observer was struck head on by a car which veered across their path. The police car was then hit by two other vehicles. Jim was killed and his driver was critically injured. He joined the Metropolitan Police in 1988, transferring to Strathclyde in 1995. At the time of his death he was based in the Road Policing Complex in Glasgow. Jim was 34 years of age and is survived by his wife Angela and their 12 year old daughter Pamela. CHIEF INSPECTOR HUGH DAVIDSON Hugh Davidson was killed on 4 June 2002. As he and a colleague travelled from Ayrshire to Police Headquarters in Glasgow, their vehicle was struck by another that crossed from the opposite carriageway and struck them head on. Hugh worked in the Complaints and Discipline branch of Strathclyde Police. He had joined Ayrshire Constabulary as a Cadet in 1973 and was appointed a Constable in Ayr in 1976. He is survived by his wife and three young daughters. SERGEANT DAVID CONNOR On 31st August 2001 David Connor was killed in a road accident while travelling to Police Headquarters. He was aged 42. CONSTABLE JOHN WILKIE John Wilkie died on 8th August 2001 when he suffered a heart attack at the end of a night shift. Known to his friends as Jack, he had joined the MOD police in February 1980 and spent his entire career at HM Naval Base on the Clyde. He is survived by his two sons Jamie and Colin. He was 53 years of age. CONSTABLE JACQUELINE HASWELL On 7th August 2000 Jacqueline Haswell was killed in a road accident while travelling to work. She was aged 30. INSPECTOR JOHN BOYLE On 28th October 1998 John Boyle suffered a fatal heart attack while on late shift at Force Headquarters. He was aged 49 and is survived by his wife Helen and son Martin. CONSTABLE MICHAEL BROWN Michael Brown was killed on 27 July 1998. He was accidentally thrown into the water from a rigid inflatable boat, during a training exercise in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. He was 34 years of age. CONSTABLE KENNETH BRODIE Kenneth Brodie was killed on 8 January 1997. His patrol car was involved in a three-car collision, in which a married couple were also killed, while on mobile patrol on the A76 near Mennock, Dumfriesshire. He was 34 years of age. CONSTABLE JAMES HUGHES James Hughes was killed on 9 June 1996. He was returning home from his duty at Johnstone police office when his vehicle was involved in a road accident. He is survived by his wife Wendy. CONSTABLE MELANIE IGOE Melanie Igoe was killed on 30 May 1995. An experienced traffic officer, she was undergoing her police motorcycle training course when she lost control of the vehicle on a bend and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Melanie is survived by her husband Jim, also a traffic motorcycle officer with Strathclyde Police. CONSTABLE MARK DAVEY Mark Davey was killed on 29 August 1995. The traffic patrol car in which he was the observer went out of control, left the road and crashed into trees near Elgin. CONSTABLE LEWIS FULTON Lewis Fulton was killed on 17 June 1994 as he and several other officers struggled with a mentally deranged man on a Glasgow street in the middle of a busy afternoon. Lewis had responded from a neighbouring division to assist his colleagues. As the man attempted to break out of their cordon towards a busy shopping area, Lewis and other officers tackled him, and during a violent struggle he was fatally stabbed. His memory lives on in Strathclyde in the form of the Lewis Fulton Scholarship which allows officers to study selected elements of policing, and at the Scottish Police College where students on every basic training course compete for the Lewis Fulton Trophy. Lewis was 28 years of age and joined Strathclyde Police in 1985. Stationed in the city centre, at the time of his death he crewed the divisional response vehicle there. He is survived by his wife Christine who is a Trustee of the Scottish Police Memorial Trust, and their son Luke. CONSTABLE KENNETH WILKIE On 25th May 1994 Kenneth Wilkie collapsed and died of heart failure. He was aged 39. CONSTABLE STUART SIMPSON Stuart 'Bart' Simpson was killed on 28 March 1994. His patrol car was struck head-on by a vehicle travelling at high speed on the wrong carriageway of the M8 motorway in Glasgow. The female driver of the vehicle was drunk, and was also killed in the collision. Stuart was 26 years of age, and joined Strathclyde Police in 1988. He served in 'R' division until 1991, when he transferred to armed response vehicle duties. He is survived by his wife Gillian and daughter Linsay. CONSTABLE CALLUM CHISHOLM Callum Chisholm was killed on 15 March 1994. His vehicle was involved in a road accident, in which he received fatal injuries. Callum was 27 years of age and joined Strathclyde Police in 1985. He was a keen rugby player and represented the force in that sport. He is survived by his wife Libby, and three sons, Sean, Ryan and Callum. SERGEANT MALCOLM HERD Malcolm Herd was killed on 24 January 1990. He was crewing the first Scottish police helicopter, operated by Strathclyde Police, when it suffered engine failure during a search for armed robbers in a heavy snowstorm. The aircraft collided with a building and fell to the ground, seriously injuring all the other crew members. Malcolm had previously served with the Metropolitan Police, and had worked on uniform and CID duties in Strathclyde before transferring to the air support unit. He was survived by his wife CONSTABLE MARTIN JOYCE Martin Joyce was killed on 10 April 1990 while responding to an emergency call to a stately home in South Queensferry. His traffic car was involved in a collision with another vehicle near Kirkliston. He was 31 years of age. CONSTABLE IAN GRAY Ian Gray was killed on 10 April 1990 while responding to an emergency call to a stately home in South Queensferry. His traffic car was involved in a collision with another vehicle near Kirkliston. He was 43 years of age. DETECTIVE INSPECTOR DAVID STEWART On 19th December 1989 David Stewart was fatally injured when his police vehicle was involved in an accident. He was aged 43. CONSTABLE EDWARD WALTON Edward Walton was killed on 13 May 1989 when the police patrol van, in which he was observer, went out of control and collided with an oncoming car late at night near Alloa. He was 34 years of age. CONSTABLE PAUL NORTH On 17th March 1987 Paul North was fatally injured when his police vehicle was involved in an accident. He was aged 35. INSPECTOR ROBERT PRYCE OLIVER On 17th February 1987 Inspector Oliver collapsed and died of a heart attack whilst on mobile patrol in Stranraer. He was aged 58 and was survived by his wife and family. SERGEANT HARRY LAWRIE BEM Harry Lawrie was killed on 1 February 1987 while assisting in a search and rescue operation on Ben More, when the helicopter he was aboard was hit by a sudden squall while trying to manoeuvre onto a ledge, and crashed into the mountainside. He was 45 years of age. CONSTABLE WILLIAM WRIGHT (RETIRED) On 20th December 1986 William Wright died of injuries received in 1959 whilst guarding a dangerous building. He was aged 56. SERGEANT ROBERT LUMSDEN Sergeant Lumsden collapsed and died on 8 August 1986 as he struggled to arrest a violent man. He was 53 years of age. DETECTIVE CONSTABLE DAVID ELLIS David Ellis was killed on 10 December 1985. His police vehicle was involved in a road accident. CONSTABLE PATRICK BURNS Patrick Burns was killed on 10 December 1985. His police vehicle was involved in a road accident CONSTABLE JOHN DOHERTY On 22nd October 1985 John Doherty collapsed and died at the Force Training Centre. He was aged 43. CONSTABLE JOHN HOUSTON On 3rd November 1983 John Houston collapsed and died within Airdrie Sheriff Court. He was aged 47. DETECTIVE SERGEANT ROSS HUNT Ross Hunt was killed on 5 June 1983. He was attempting to arrest a man for serious assault when members of the suspect's family attacked him and other officers with knives and other weapons. Ross was well known and highly respected by both colleagues and the public. Always available for help and advice, he had volunteered to assist the officers make the arrest during which he was killed. Already on his second extension of service, he had less than 3 months left to complete a distinguished 30 year career. CONSTABLE DAVID ADAMSON David Adamson was killed on 28 February 1983. While engaged in an emergency hospital escort his patrol car skidded on black ice near Whitburn and collided with a tree. He was 29 years of age. CONSTABLE DAVID MACKENZIE On 26th September 1982 David MacKenzie collapsed and died within London Road Police Station. He was aged 39. CONSTABLE JOSEPH DORIS Joseph Doris was killed on 5 July 1982, when his police vehicle was involved in a road accident on the south side of Glasgow. CONSTABLE ROGER MACPHAIL Roger Macphail died on 2nd February 1982. Roger was the Scottish Police Badminton Champion and was competing in the Veterans Section of the Police Athletic Association Badminton Championships at Cannochy Sports Complex, Stirling when he complained of chest pains and collapsed. After being treated by the university doctor he was moved to Stirling Royal Infirmary but died before arrival. He joined the City of Glasgow Police on the 5th November 1955 and was survived by his wife Theresa and their nine children. SERGEANT EDWARD THOMSON Edward Thomson was killed on 13 January 1982. He was responding to an emergency call to Croy village near his station in Cumbernauld, when his vehicle skidded on ice and was struck by another. Sgt Thomson suffered serious chest injuries from which he died soon after admission to Monklands Hospital in Airdrie. He was 41 years of age. He started his police career in 1960 with Buckinghamshire Constabulary, but transferred to Dunbartonshire Constabulary in Scotland during 1965. In 1975 this force was amalgamated into the newly formed Strathclyde Police. He is survived by his wife Marion, daughter Susan and son Iain. CONSTABLE JACK HARVEY Jack Harvey was killed on 5 December 1981 when his police vehicle was involved in a collision with a wall. He was 36 years of age. CONSTABLE WILLIAM MATHIESON On 26th September 1981 William Mathieson was fatally injured when his police vehicle was involved in an accident. He was aged 21. SPECIAL CONSTABLE EDWARD BELL Edward Bell died on 9 August 1981 from multiple injuries, including a fractured skull, sustained while on patrol with two regular officers. Their police vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle at Bonnybridge. He was 35 years of age, and is survived by his wife Valerie and three sons, Raymond, Mervyn and Colin. CONSTABLE GEORGE GARROTT George Garrott was killed on 5 March 1980. He had responded to a call about persons unlawfully in railway property and was in pursuit of them when power arced from an overhead cable and electrocuted him. CONSTABLE JAMES CUMMING On 6th February 1980 James Cumming collapsed and died at a road accident. He was aged 40. SERGEANT GEORGE HUGHES On 21st February 1979 George Hughes was fatally injured in a road accident while on his way to duty. He was aged 42. Sgt. Hughes wife Ray who was in the car with him was also killed. They are survived by their children Kenneth, Sheila and Brian. CONSTABLE GERARD HOGG On 7 November 1978, Gerald Hogg was the driver of a traffic car engaged on road check duties with the Department of Transport, when it was struck by a lorry and thrown into the path of an oncoming vehicle on the A74 near Johnstonebridge. He had nearly six years service with the force, having been a Traffic Department officer based at Lockerbie since 1977. He was 28 years of age and is survived by his wife and 13 month old daughter. CONSTABLE ISABELLA HARRIS Isabella Harris was killed on 7 November 1978. She was a passenger in a traffic car engaged on road check duties with the Department of Transport, when it was struck by a lorry and thrown into the path of an oncoming vehicle on the A74 near Johnstonebridge. Originally from Belfast, she had been a teacher in Northern Ireland before joining the force in March 1975. She was based at Dumfries on the Traffic Department, she and a colleague having been the first female Traffic officers in the Constabulary. She was 27 years of age. CADET MICHAEL HALL Michael Hall was killed on 7 November 1978. He was a passenger in a traffic car engaged on road check duties with the Department of Transport, when it was struck by a lorry and thrown into the path of an oncoming vehicle on the A74 near Johnstonebridge. Michael Hall was 16 years of age, and a native of Sunderland. He had joined the Cadet force in August 1978 and was stationed at Dumfries. At the time of his death he was on training experience with the Traffic Department. CONSTABLE DAVID BARRIE On 22nd May 1978 David Barrie was fatally injured in a road accident on his way to work. He was aged 22. SERGEANT NEIL CASKIE Neil Caskie was killed on 5 November 1977. Serving at the time with the Scottish Crime Squad, his police vehicle was struck by a taxi performing a U-turn in his path in the east end of Glasgow. DETECTIVE SERGEANT EDWARD MOLLINSON On 26th August 1977 Edward Mollinson was killed in a road accident on his way home from duty. He was aged 34 SERGEANT ALAN GORDON Sergeant Alan Gordon was killed on 10 August 1977. He was carrying out a road check in Market Street, Aberdeen when a drunk driver's vehicle failed to stop, collided with Sgt Gordon and dragged him a considerable distance before he was thrown from the vehicle. CONSTABLE GEORGE TAYLOR Constable George Taylor was killed on 30 November 1976, the first officer to be killed on duty since the formation of Strathclyde Police. He was on routine patrol with another officer, near The State Hospital in Carstairs, when they noticed 2 men, dressed as Prison Officers, acting suspiciously. On approaching them he was attacked and hacked to death. The men escaped in the Police vehicle, leaving PC Taylor for dead, by the roadside. His colleague escaped uninjured. Once their breakout was discovered, both men were later caught as they fled to England. At the High Court they were convicted of the murder of PC Taylor and were the first people to be committed to a ‘true’ life sentence by the Scottish Judicial system. George was 27 years of age at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Sally and their 4 children, David, Stephen, Paul & Michelle, whose ages varied from 11mths to 8 years. CONSTABLE JAMES MASON On 27th November 1976 James Mason was fatally injured when his police vehicle was involved in an accident. He was aged 27 and is survived by his wife Helen and sons Robert and Colin. CHIEF INSPECTOR THOMAS CRINGLES On 26th August 1976 Thomas Cringles collapsed and died whilst dealing with a disturbance outside his home. He was aged 51 and is survived by his wife Marion. INSPECTOR DUNCAN MACFARLANE On 20th July 1976 Duncan MacCarlane collapsed and died whilst on duty in Paisley. He was aged 45. CONSTABLE WILLIAM ROBERTSON William died 6th April 1976 aged 34. He collapsed in the police office at Forth and died of a brain haemorrhage. CONSTABLE JAMES BERWICK On 19th July 1975 James Berwick collapsed and died whilst on night duty. He was aged 54. CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT JOHN CHALMERS On 16th September 1974 John Chalmers collapsed and died at the opening of a new station. He was aged 54. CONSTABLE DAVID ROOKE On 16th November 1973 David Rooke was killed in a road accident when his van skidded on ice. He was aged 39. CONSTABLE COLIN MACDUFF Colin MacDuff was killed on 27 June 1973, when he entered the River Clyde at Custom House Quay to attempt the rescue of a man who had fallen into the water. As he struggled to bring the man to shore Colin was drowned. He was survived by his wife Ellen. CONSTABLE JAMES HAY On 20th April 1973 James Hay collapsed and died of heart failure whilst within Maryhill Police Station. He was aged 42. CONSTABLE JAMES McHARDY James McHardy was killed on 20 August 1972. His police vehicle was involved in a road accident on the Aberdeen to Stonehaven road when an opposing vehicle went out of control, crossed the carriageway and struck the police vehicle head on. CONSTABLE LESLIE SINCLAIR Leslie Sinclair died on 24 August 1972. He was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Constable McHardie on 20 August when an opposing vehicle on the Aberdeen to Stonehaven road went out of control, crossed the carriageway and struck the police vehicle head on. CONSTABLE DAVID ROBERT PETERSON David Peterson was killed on 9 September 1972 when he entered a high rise building in the Gorbals area of Glasgow in response to a fire. As he evacuated residents from upper floors of the building he was overcome by smoke. CONSTABLE MATTHEW BROWN Matthew died 1st January 1972 aged 46. He became unwell on duty and soon after he collapsed and died of heart failure. Matthew joined Lanarkshire Police in 1947 serving in Glenboig, Chapelhall, Leadhills and finally Bellshill. He was survived by his wife Anne and a son and daughter. SERGEANT JAMES FAIRBROTHER James Fairweather died on 26th June 1971. He collapsed and died whilst on duty within Garsgadden Police Station. He was aged 54. SERGEANT GEORGE HASTIE Sergeant Hastie collapsed and died on 10 February 1971 while working in the police office at Hawick. He was 40 years of age. CONSTABLE JOHN ROBERTSON John Robertson was killed on 15 November 1970 when his police Land Rover left the ice-bound road in Glasgow and struck a tree, bursting into flames. CONSTABLE ROBERT BELFORD Robert 'Bert' Belford was killed on 15 March 1970 when his traffic car was in collision with another vehicle at a road junction in the south side of Glasgow. CONSTABLE EDWARD BARNETT Edward Barnett died on 4 January 1970 from gunshot wounds received on 30 December 1969. He and other officers became suspicious of a man who unknown to them had carried out a bank robbery on the outskirts of Glasgow. As he carried the proceeds into his home, he was challenged by the officers, who knew him as a former colleague. He invited them into his home, where he produced a handgun and shot them. CONSTABLE ANGUS MACKENZIE Angus MacKenzie was killed on 30 December 1969. He and other officers became suspicious of a man who unknown to them had carried out a bank robbery on the outskirts of Glasgow. SERGEANT DONALD MCLEOD Donald McLeod died on 20th May 1969. He collapsed and died whilst on duty within Greenock Police Office. He was aged 41. SPECIAL CONSTABLE GEORGE GATES George Gates was killed on 1968 by three men whom he had recognised as known criminals, and realised were in possession of stolen property. Having alerted the police, he followed the men, who knew him to be a Special Constable. They ambushed him and beat him to death. One of the men was sentenced to life imprisonment while the other two received lesser terms. CONSTABLE JOHN CLARK John Clark was found dead on his beat on 20 October 1968, having died from head injuries that were unexplained. He was 45 years of age and is survived by his daughter Dorothy who was aged 17 at the time. CONSTABLE JOHN MACLURG Constable MacLurg collapsed and died while taking part in a mountain rescue on 25 December 1968. He was 38 years of age. CONSTABLE JAMES DAVIDSON Constable Davidson was killed on 15 April 1967 when his police vehicle was involved in a road accident while en route to Glasgow. CONSTABLE JOSEPH DRAKE Joseph Drake was killed on 11 August 1967. He was attempting to stop a stolen motor lorry being pursued by police when it struck his patrol car at a road-block at Dennyloanhead near Falkirk. He was 36 years of age. INSPECTOR JOHN RUTHERFORD WATSON Inspector Watson died on 13 February 1967. While on supervisory patrol and enquiries in the village of Thornhill, he collapsed and died from a heart attack. John Watson was a married man and a native of Cumberland. He was 50 years of age and had 29 years police service having joined the former Dumfries-shire Constabulary in 1938 and at the time of his death was Sub Divisional Officer at Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire. CONSTABLE NORMAN ANDREW
STODART Constable Stodart died on the 29th September 1966. While attending a routine enquiry he became
violently ill and was taken to Law Hospital where he died a short time later from a cerebral
hemorrhage. SERGEANT DONALD ROBERTSON B.E.M. Donald Robertson was killed on 19 December 1965. He was manning a road block on the Perth to Glasgow road, set up to recapture three escaped prisoners, when he was struck by a motor van, killing him instantly. CONSTABLE KENNETH FRANCIS Kenneth Francis was killed 30 October 1965. He was struck by a vehicle when in attendance at an accident scene. He was 36 years of age. CONSTABLE JOHN McKENZIE John McKenzie was killed on 16 January 1964 when the police vehicle in which he was a passenger was involved in a collision. He was 28 years of age. CONSTABLE ROBERT BELL Robert Bell was killed on 23 November 1963. He was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at a road block he was manning. SERGEANT WILLIAM BATESMAN William Batesman died on 16th May 1963. He collapsed and died whilst on duty within the police station. He was aged 45. CONSTABLE JAMES BROWN James Brown was killed on 7 February 1962, when his police motorcycle collided with a wagon. He was 30 years of age. SUPERINTENDENT CHARLES MCNEILL Charles McNeill was killed in 1962 when his vehicle was involved in a road accident. CONSTABLE WILLIAM MACCULLOCH William McCulloch died on 5th December 1960 when he was killed in a road accident while travelling to the police college. He was aged 20. CONSTABLE ALEXANDER GRAHAM On 21st March 1960 Alexander Graham collapsed and died at Dunblane near the end of his night shift. He was aged 36. CONSTABLE WALTER MCMILLAN Walter McMillan was killed on 25 January 1960. He was fatally injured when chasing a suspect at the Mineral Depot in Morrison Street, Edinburgh. He vaulted a low wall but fell 20 feet into the roadway below. He died later that evening from serious head injuries. He was 30 years of age and was survived by his wife Bunty and three daughters, aged 8, 4 and 1 year. CONSTABLE ROBERT GILLIES Robert Gillies was killed on 28 September 1958, when his police vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision. CONSTABLE PATRICK MOULDS Patrick Moulds was killed on 9 August 1958, when his police vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision. DETECTIVE CONSTABLE JAMES MILROY James Milroy died on 27th March 1958 when his police car was involved in an accident. He was aged 35. He was survived by his wife Margaret and their children Anne, Marion, Alan and Henry. CONSTABLE JAMES ANDERSON Constable Anderson was killed on 1 May 1955. His patrol car was involved in a collision with another vehicle. He was 41 years of age. CHIEF INSPECTOR JAMES McCLAFFERTY James McClafferty was killed on 1 October 1954. He was in pursuit of suspects from a crime scene and had detained one of them when he suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 57 years of age. CONSTABLE THOMAS MUIR Thomas Muir died on 8th September 1953. He was killed when his police motorcycle was involved in an accident. He was aged 28. CONSTABLE JOHN CURRIE John Currie died on 23rd January 1953. He was killed in a road accident on his way to duty. He was aged 22. CONSTABLE JOHN MacLEOD John MacLeod was killed on 4 September 1952. He was shot dead by an armed criminal whom he had approached with the intention of disarming him. He was 31 years of age. CONSTABLE ALEXANDER ROSS Alexander Ross was killed on 6 May 1952 when his police motorcycle was in collision with a lorry at Deskford, Banffshire. SERGEANT WILLIAM GIBSON William Gibson died on 22 May 1951. Following reports of an armed man roaming the Dumfries streets in the early hours, the sergeant and two colleagues made a search of the area. As they drew up alongside a man loitering on a corner, the man produced a shotgun and without warning shot Sgt Gibson in the head. William Gibson was stationed at Dumfries Police Station. He had joined Dumfries Burgh Police in 1928, continuing to serve with the Dumfries-shire County Police in 1936, before amalgamation into the present force in 1948. He was 44 years of age and survived by his wife, a son aged 18 and daughter aged 12 years CONSTABLE HENRY FERRIER Henry Ferrier was killed on 1 October 1950. He was on mobile patrol when his vehicle overturned after a tyre blowout. He was 40 years of age. CONSTABLE STEWART CAMERON McDONALD Stewart McDonald was killed on 22 November 1948. He was in pursuit of criminals when he was struck by a train. CONSTABLE ALEXANDER CHRISTIE Alexander Christie died on 30th May 1946. He was fatally injured when his motorcycle was involved in an accident. He was aged 36. INSPECTOR ERNEST WALKER On 29th June 1944 Ernest Walker was killed when he was run over by a drunk driver. He was aged 47 and was survived by his wife and four children James, Ernest, Robert and Irene. SPECIAL CONSTABLE ANDREW PERRIE Andrew Perrie died on 15 April 1944. Off duty, he assisted colleagues at a large disturbance by soldiers in Inverness, where he arrested two of the group. Soon after arriving at the police station he collapsed and died from a heart attack. He was 47 years of age. SERGEANT WILLIAM MCDONALD William McDonald died on 8th July 1943. He was killed when his police car was involved in a collision with a lorry. He was aged 36. CONSTABLE JAMES SHEPHERD James Shepherd was killed on 30 June 1943 when his police vehicle was involved in a road collision. CONSTABLE ROBERT STIRRAT Robert Stirrat was killed on 5 May 1941. He was investigating the report of a suspicious object, as reported by a member of the public. It exploded as he was examining it, blowing off his arm and legs, causing his death. CONSTABLE WILLIAM DALGETTY William Dalgetty was killed on 8 April 1941. He was on duty during an air raid and was killed by enemy action. SPECIAL CONSTABLE THOMAS HAMILTON Thomas Hamilton died on 14th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action during an air raid. He was aged 36. SPECIAL CONSTABLE JAMES WILKINSON James Wilkinson died on 14th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action during an air raid. He was aged 37. SPECIAL CONSTABLE JOHN MACKRELL John Mackrell died on 14th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action during an air raid. He was aged 29. CONSTABLE JACK DEEGANS Jack Deegans died on 13th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action during an air raid. He was aged 41. SPECIAL SERGEANT DONALD MACDONALD Donald MacDonald died on 13th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action during an air raid. He was aged 52. SPECIAL CONSTABLE JOHN GRAY John Gray died on 13th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action during an air raid. He was aged 38. SERGEANT PETER JOHNSTONE Peter Johnstone died on 13th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action while on duty within the Dalmuir Ordnance Factory. He was aged 44. SERGEANT WILLIAM LYONS William Lyons died on 13th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action while on duty within Dalmuir Ordnance Factory. He was aged 50. CONSTABLE THOMAS MARLIN Thomas Marlin died on 13th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action while on duty within Dalmuir Ordnance Factory. He was aged 37. CONSTABLE WILLIAM DICKSON William Dickson died on 13th March 1941. He was killed by enemy action during an air raid. He was aged 27. SPECIAL CONSTABLE GEORGE STORRAR George Storrar was killed on 23 January 1941. When off duty, he attempted to secure a drifting mine on the beach at West Wemyss by attaching a wire to it, when it exploded and he was killed along with others. His name is inscribed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Civilian War Dead Roll. The Scottish Home Department approved a Special Widows Pension on account of his death having been as a result of the execution of his duties. ASSISTANT CHIEF CONSTABLE ROBERT THOMSON M.B.E. Robert Thomson was killed on 18 July 1940. He was shot dead by a drunken soldier during an air raid blackout as he was en route to a call out situation. He was 38 years of age and was survived by wife Betsy. CONSTABLE SAMUEL MCGOWAN Samuel McGowan died on 16th June 1940. He drowned in the River Tummel. He was aged 34. CONSTABLE ANDREW MATTHEW Andrew Matthew (formerly Andrew Merchant) was killed on 26 January 1939. His pedal cycle was involved in a collision with a motor vehicle. SERGEANT WILLIAM CURRY William Curry died on 15th December 1938. He collapsed and died from heart failure while on night duty. He was aged 53. CONSTABLE ALLAN PROUDFOOT Allan Proudfoot was killed on 14 December 1938 along with Constable Murdoch. Both officers were struck by a train while on foot patrol of the railway line in the Port Dundas areas of Glasgow. He was 47 years of age. CONSTABLE DAVID TANNER MURDOCH David Murdoch was killed on 14 December 1938 along with Constable Proudfoot. Both officers were struck by a train while on foot patrol of the railway line in the Port Dundas areas of Glasgow. He was 45 years of age. CONSTABLE JOHN BROWN John Brown died on 30 July 1938 from shock and multiple leg injuries sustained the previous day, while dealing with the scene of a road traffic accident on the outskirts of Inverness, and struck by a passing motor car. He was 21 years of age. A memorial plaque is sited at Northern Constabulary Headquarters at Inverness. INSPECTOR SIMON TAYLOR Simon Taylor died on 8th January 1938. He collapsed and died within a police box. He was aged 41. CONSTABLE HUGH WELSH Hugh Welsh died on 5th January 1938. He died of infection from an injury sustained while investigating a burglary. He was aged 36. CONSTABLE ALEXANDER CASTLE Alexander Castle died on 6 September 1937 from injuries received the previous day when his police motorcycle collided with an animal and crashed. CONSTABLE HARRY WILKINSON Harry Wilkinson died on 5th August 1937. He was fatally injured in a road accident. He was aged 42. CONSTABLE WILLIAM COWIE EWEN William died 24th January 1937 aged 53. He was found drowned in Rothesay Dock after going missing on duty in bad weather. CONSTABLE JAMES MCQUILKIN James McQuilkin died on 21st May 1933. He was killed when his motorbike crashed while attending the scene of an accident. He was aged 33. CONSTABLE MacGREGOR WALKER MacGregor Walker was killed on 16 September 1932. He was conducting a road check on vehicles entering the city. As he was interviewing the driver of a vehicle, a drunk driver crashed into the rear of that vehicle, knocking the officer to the ground and fatally injuring him. SERGEANT SYDNEY CRAIK SYdney Craik was killed on 12 September 1932 in a road traffic collision. CONSTABLE WILLIAM MacKINTOSH William MacKintosh was killed on 24 September 1930. Whilst en route between his station at Ballinluig and duties at Perth Hunt races, his motorcycle was involved in a collision when he swerved to avoid a stray bullock. he sustained serious injuries from which he died. CONSTABLE JOHN BURR John Burr died on 6th December 1929. He was fatally injured in a road accident. He was aged 25. SERGEANT SAMUEL MACLEAN Samuel MacLean died on 27th August 1926. He was fatally injured in a road accident. He was aged 45. CONSTABLE ROBERT BRYCE RENNIE Robert died 6th July 1925 aged 49. He was accidentally asphyxiated by his collar after fainting in the police station. CONSTABLE PETER MUNRO Peter Munro died on 7th August 1921. He was fatally injured whilst making an arrest after a football match. He was aged 21. INSPECTOR ROBERT JOHNSTON Robert Johnston was killed on 4th May 1921. He was shot dead while escorting a Sinn Fein prisoner. He was aged 41. SERGEANT JAMES PATERSON James Paterosn died on 2nd May 1920. He was struck by a skidding car while patrolling his beat. He was aged 49. CONSTABLE WILLIAM MCGREGOR William McGregor died on 1st June 1919. He died of injuries received six months earlier during a riot. He was aged 25. CONSTABLE JAMES CAMPBELL James Campbell was killed on 20th January 1919. He was shot twice while attempting to arrest a burglar. He was aged 39. CONSTABLE GEORGE MILLER George Miller collapsed and died on 6th July 1916 after suffering heart failure whilst on duty within Govan Police Court. He was aged 35. CONSTABLE GEORGE CRAIB George Craib was killed on 22 August 1915. During the rescue of a girl from the scene of an accident, he fell heavily, striking his head. He died later in the day. CONSTABLE THOMAS ROTHNIE Thomas Rothnie was killed on 12 December 1912. He was travelling to London to collect a prisoner and fell from the train at Gretna during an incident. He was 42 years of age. CONSTABLE ROBERT SMITH Robert died 16th July 1912 aged 55. He died from a disease as the result of an injury received while on duty. CONSTABLE JOHN TOUGH John Tough died on 7th January 1912. He died of injuries received twelve months earlier while dealing with an affray. He was aged 49. SERGEANT WILLIAM DICKSON William Dickson died on 21st October 1911. He collapsed and died of heart failure whilst on night duty. He was aged 52. CONSTABLE JOHN SAMUEL John Samuel died on 28 May 1911. He was assisting in a rescue from the River Tay, and entered the water to compensate for the short length of a lifebelt he was holding. He got out of his depth and drowned. CONSTABLE HUGH SAVAGE Hugh savage died on 18th December 1910. He collapsed and died of heart failure while chasing youths. He was aged 23. CONSTABLE ADAM SMITH Adam Smith died on 23 April 1909. On plain clothes duty, he was in pursuit of youths when he suffered a heart attack and collapsed. CONSTABLE JAMES BLACK James Black died on 4 November 1908. During his patrol of the Earl Grey Dock he was heard to shout for assistance, and his helmet was later recovered from the water. The following day his body was found in the dock where he had drowned. CONSTABLE PETER McLAREN Peter McLaren went missing from his beat during heavy fog in Grangemouth during the early hours of 2 October 1908, and was later found drowned in the canal basin near the police office. He was 21 years of age. SUPERINTENDENT CHARLES MACINTYRE Charles MacIntyre collapsed and died of a heart attack on 2 June 1908 as he was escorting a prisoner. He was 68 years of age. CONSTABLE WILLIAM McKELVIE William McKelvie was killed on 20 July 1906. He was attempting to arrest a criminal and was beaten to death. He was 34 years of age. INSPECTOR JOHN SCOTT John Scott was killed on 27 August 1906. He was on foot patrol near Dunbar when he was struck by a train. CONSTABLE ROBERT CAUGHEY Robert Caughey died on 31st December 1905. he drowned when he fell into a river while on patrol. He was aged 29. CONSTABLE WILLIAM URQUHART William Urquhart died on 22 March 1904, having suffered a heart attack as he was struggling to arrest a youth who was causing mischief. INSPECTOR WILLIAM CUMMING William Cumming died on 15th September 1903. He was fatally injured in a road accident while walking home from his office. He was aged 57. CONSTABLE JAMES HARTE James Harte died on 4 April 1900. He suffered a heart attack as he was attempting to arrest a man for breach of the peace. He was 38 years of age. CONSTABLE THOMAS KING Thomas King was killed on 20 December 1898 as he lay in wait for seven hours at a house in Tulloch near Nethybridge, in order to execute a warrant on a poacher. When the suspect returned he entered the house to arrest him and was fatally wounded by a shotgun blast. He was 46 years of age. An inscribed memorial stone was erected on his grave in Abernethy Churchyard at Nethybridge and later a plaque at Police HQ at Inverness. CONSTABLE ANDREW URQUHART Andrew Urquhart was killed on 24 October 1897 when he was struck with a poker as he deal with a domestic disturbance. He was 32 years of age. CONSTABLE JOSEPH SIMPSON PC Simpson was stationed at Bothwell, During the course of his duties he crossed a railway line and was hit by a passenger train. Born in Northern Ireland he was aged 25 and unmarried. CONSTABLE COLIN MCKENZIE Colin died 30th August 1896, aged 45, as a result of a head injury received when he was assaulted while on night duty. CONSTABLE ROBERT CRUICKSHANKS Robert died 20th August 1896 aged 30. He collapsed and died of heart failure patrolling his beat early in the morning. CONSTABLE ROBERT MURRAY Robert Murray was killed on 9 December 1895 as he tried to stop a runaway horse. He was 23 years of age. CONSTABLE JAMES McLEAN James McLean was killed on 2 December 1894. He was accidentally drowned on duty when he was blown into Edinburgh docks. He was 24 years of age. SERGEANT WILSON CHARLES Wilson Charles was killed on 22 November 1894. He was struck by a train during his patrol. He was 39 years of age. CONSTABLE JAMES GRAHAM James Graham died 22nd October 1894. He collapsed and died from a ruptured blood vessel while patrolling his beat. He was aged 34. CONSTABLE ALEXANDER McMAHON Alexander McMahon died on 18 December 1893, from an injury sustained a few days previously when engaged on observation duty. He was 40 years of age. INSPECTOR JAMES ALLAN James Allan was killed on 4 September 1893. He was attacked by a mob as he was arresting an armed criminal. INSPECTOR DAVID McBAY David McBay died on 19 August 1893 from injuries received on 15 August. He was stabbed by a deranged man who had already shot several people, including two police officers, and who was barricaded in a house. CONSTABLE JOHN McNAUGHT John McNaught died on 28 May 1892 when he collapsed while struggling with a youth he was arresting. He was 25 years of age. CONSTABLE JOHN MCDONALD John McDonald was drowned on 21 February 1890 when he was blown into the dock where he was patrolling. He was 25 years of age. CONSTABLE ALEXANDER LAMONT On 20th December 1888 Alexander Lamont suffered a stroke in the early hours of the morning while patrolling his beat. He was aged 41. INSPECTOR GEORGE RIDDELL George Riddell died on 16 August 1888, when he collapsed while escorting a prisoner. He was 44 years of age. CONSTABLE DUNCAN GALBRAITH Duncan Galbraith died on 9th July 1885. He drowned when he fell into Greenock Docks whilst on night duty. He was aged 41. CONSTABLE ALEXANDER LAMOND Alexander Lamond died on 26 May 1883. While dealing with a disturbance at a house at Kirkcaldy Harbour late the previous night, he was repeatedly bludgeoned by three men, including being struck with his own truncheon, and died from skull fractures early next morning. He had only joined the force two months earlier having previously served in the Aberdeenshire Constabulary. He was 27 years of age and a single man, survived by two brothers and a sister. SERGEANT CHARLES CRUICKSHANKS On 1st December 1882 Charles Cruickshanks collapsed and died of heart failure while on duty at Lochee Police Station. He was 32 years of age. CONSTABLE DAVID McDONALD David McDonald was killed on 20 June 1882. He was stabbed to death by a man whom he had warned about disorderly conduct. He was 26 years of age. CONSTABLE GEORGE LOW George Low was killed on 14 March 1881. He was stabbed to death while making an arrest of two criminals. DETECTIVE CONSTABLE HARRY PITMAN Harry Pitman was killed on 6 May 1880. He fell from his police horse when on mounted patrol. He was 38 years of age. CONSTABLE JAMES FRASER James Fraser died from a stomach wound inflicted on 19 July 1878, when he was stabbed while forcing entry to a hotel room in an attempt to arrest a deranged alcoholic, who had smashed up his room at the Grant Arms at Grantown. He was 39 years of age, and is buried in Abernethy Churchyard at Nethybridge. CONSTABLE ARCHIBALD COOK Archibald Cook died of exposure on 25 November 1877 as he patrolled on a very cold night. He was 53 years of age. CONSTABLE ROBERT GOURLAY Robert Gourlay was killed in 1876. He sustained injuries while on duty, the exact cause of which is not known. CONSTABLE WILLIAM FORBES William Forbes died on 24 February 1876, when patrolling his beat at Ness Walk, Inverness in the early hours. Part of the unprotected river bank gave way and he fell into the River Ness and was drowned. He was 36 years of age. CONSTABLE DONALD ANDERSON Donald Anderson died on 14 December 1875 from injuries sustained while patrolling his beat on the late evening of 24 November. He had slipped and fallen to the ground, breaking his leg. Infection set in resulting in amputation of the limb and his subsequent death. He was 28 years of age. CONSTABLE JOHN McCAUCHEY John McCauchey was killed on 3 May 1875 when he was attacked by a mob as he tried to arrest a criminal. CONSTABLE JAMES MCLELLAN James McLellan died on 13th August 1873. He was found drowned in the River Cart. He was aged 22. SERGEANT JAMES WATSON James Watson was killed on 18 September 1870. Along with the Fire Brigade Superintendent he was assisting with crowd control at the scene of a fire in Trades Lane, Dundee, when part of a wall collapsed on them, burying them under blazing debris. INSPECTOR LACHLAN McKINNON Lachlan McKinnon was killed on 1 January 1869. He was stabbed to death by a criminal he was trying to arrest. CONSTABLE THOMAS MUTCH Thomas Mutch was killed on 1 December 1868. He was bludgeoned to death while making an arrest. CONSTABLE WILLIAM SWAN William Swan was killed on 27 August 1868. He was patrolling the King William Dock in Dundee when he was blown into the water and drowned. CONSTABLE ROBERT CAMPBELL Robert Campbell was killed on 5 November 1863 when he was attacked by a drunken man he was moving on. He was 46 years of age. CONSTABLE JOHN McARTHUR John McArthur was found dead on his beat on 2 May 1861. He had sustained head injuries, the cause of which remains unknown. He was30 years of age. CONSTABLE DUNCAN CAMERON Duncan Cameron died on 24 October 1860 when he drowned after falling into the River Clyde as he patrolled the docks area. He was 26 years of age. CONSTABLE CHARLES ANGUS Charles Angus was killed in 1858. He was stabbed to death when arresting a deranged man armed with a knife. SPECIAL CONSTABLE JAMES ALEXANDER James Alexander was shot dead on 8 March 1848, being accidentally caught in crossfire by military personnel helping to quell rioting in the city. WATCHMAN JOHN COLQUHOUN John died 4th April 1847, of a fractured skull, apparently having been assaulted on night duty. CONSTABLE RICHARD PACE Richard Pace was killed in 1846. He was bludgeoned to death by a crowd who had released a prisoner from a police office. CONSTABLE THOMAS CORSTORPIN Thomas Corstorpin was fatally wounded on 19 January 1844 when he was stabbed in the chest while attempting to execute an arrest warrant on a mentally deranged man, who had been threatening members of the public with a knife in the town. CONSTABLE JOSEPH COLLIE Joseph Collie was killed 26 October 1835. During stormy weather, he was blown into the water at Waterloo Quay. SPECIAL CONSTABLE ALEXANDER ROSS Alexander Ross was killed on 12th July 1831. He was shot dead during disturbances while preventing a sectarian march. WATCHMAN HENRY PEARSON Henry Pearson was killed on 31st July 1820. He was shot to death by soldiers. WATCHMAN ROBERT SIMPSON Robert Simpson was killed on 31st July 1820. He was shot to death by soldiers. WATCHMAN DUGALD CAMPBELL Dugald Campbell was killed on 1 January 1812. He was fatally injured when bludgeoned during rioting by a gang of youths. CONSTABLE JOHN BUCHAN John Buchan was killed in February 1770. He was stabbed by a thief he was trying to arrest at Stonehaven market.
